Oh, gods, there isn't enough brain bleach in the world to wipe that trailer from my memory. I think I'll go huggle my Jeremy Brett DVDs and weep softly in a corner for a bit. The Bechdel Test is the least of this film's worries, methinks.

Though at least it'll do for Holmes/Watson what NuTrek did for Kirk/Spock, I betcha.

Is there any mention of the 7 per cent solution?

I think they had to take it out so that the film could be rated PG-13.

I'm glad someone knows whatI'm talking about. I was so shocked by that passage in the Sign of Four that I bumped my head hard on the bedhead.I was 14 when I read it, and I didn't know about the prevelance of drugs in Victorian times then. I do know. Half of Victorian society were happily injesting things that would get you thrown in the slammer for a long stretch nowadays.

I really, really doubt the movie could ever live up to such a trailer. Assuming it's real (and these days you can't be certain), maybe they *should* have just made the trailer, and leave people to imagine what the rest would be like?

oh dear gods--there is no holmes for me after brett (altho i could see hugh laurie pulling it off.), and this is so terribly, terribly wrong, but i cannot. stop. laughing.

i'm sure this would make my brain hurt. and the trailer is probably the best part. but i'd probably see it anyway. *is hopeless*

Numerous? I can think of two-- Irene Adler and Mary Morstan. Who else do you count as 'kickass'?

(I'm going to reserve judgment-- trailers always pick out little bits and pieces that make a good trailer but are not necessarily representative of the whole. I've been a Holmes fan since I was in 5th grade and have recently re-read the entire canon, and frankly other than the kissing part, I don't think the characterization looks that off. Holmes was a boxer and he knew martial arts, and there was a lot of action in the books, they weren't all cerebral. I think they'd be in the 'ripping yarns' class. :))

I agree. After the initial shock of seeing it was directed by Guy Ritchie, I remembered how much action there was in the original stories. When Holmes initially "died," he did it while kicking Professor Moriarty's ass.

So with that in mind, I rewatched the trailer. Quite honestly, I think RDJ and JL will remain true to their characters. (As part of his preparation, RDJ watched all of the Jeremy Brett episodes.) It's the story I question. I'm not sure about the idea of monsters and supernatural elements being thrown in.

To be honest, I'm going to go see the film when it comes out. I want to see how RDJ and JL handle both characters with this storyline. Besides, the trailer has me hooked.

Until then, I'm going to reread The Hound of the Baskervilles. There's a great scene in that story where Watson bitches Holmes out that the whiny Watson bit made me think of. :D

The supernatural elements bring to mind Fred Saberhagen's "Holmes Dracula File."

There's a great short story (The Adventure of the Yellow Face where Holmes gets it ENTIRLEY wrong. At the end, he asks Watson to remind him of it if he ever gets to big for his boots again.

"Watson, if it should ever strike you that I am getting a little overconfident in my powers, or giving less pains to a case than it deserves, kindly whisper 'Norbury' in my ear, and I shall be infinitely obliged to you."

The "queenly" Lady Hilda Trelawney Hope, the unnamed avenger in Charles Augustus Milverton, the intrepid Violet Hunter - plenty of material for filmmakers to draw on! :)

I like Downey but c'mon Downey and Law are completely against type. And Watson will be taller than Holmes? Never! Rupert Everett did a great job; I'd like to see more of him.

That being said, it looks lush and entertaining, so I'd have to see it. They could be good enough to prove me absolutely wrong.
